CAPER Regiments
In the fall of 1970, 4 CAPER Regimental Headquarters were established. I was the one who established the criterion and selected the headquarters location.
Here is my memory of how they were set up:
1. The regiments were made up of several Pershing Rifles Regiments and were given the lowest regimental number. The hope was that as the number of companies expanded, the regiments could them be divided.
2. The units kept the number of their Pershing Rifles Company. This was so that as we expanded and added companies, they wouldn't have to keep changing their Company designation.
3. We also wanted them at a Pershing Rifles Regimental Headquarters if at all possible for their help and guidance in setting up a Regimental Headquarters.
4. The company needed to have sufficient company size to handle the Regimental duties without hurting the Company. That is something we never really had and we wanted our regiments to be strong.
5. We had to get permission from their ROTC PMS, and their PR Company and Regiment. It took a lot of time for me and the National Headquarters Advisor.
The CAPER Regiments were:
CAPER 1st Regiment, at Company A-3, Indiana University (PR 3rd Regimental Headquarters)
CAPER 4th Regiment, at Company C-4, Clemson University (PR 4th Regimental Headquarters)
CAPER 5th Regiment, at Company A-5, Pennsylvania State University, Altoona Campus (PR 5th Regimental Headquarters was at PSU, University Park)
CAPER 6th Regiment, at Company B-9. University of Colorado at Boulder (PR 9th Regimental Headquarters) This was a very small CAPER Regiment that was spread over the western part of the county. Some where in my memory, I'm not totally sure if the location was actually selected or if this regiment was handled by National Headquarters. Either way, since we were in that regiment, the plan was to work closely with them. Some times my memories fail!
